A Basic Sailboat Owner’s Library

Posted on Monday 11 August 2014

I have noticed a lot of new sailboat owners seem to need an idea of what they need to know about being sailboat owners. Here is a good basic library for new sailboat owners.

Books on Maintenance and Repair

These books will be invaluable in keeping the boat afloat and in good shape.

This Old Boat, 2nd Ed., by Don Casey

The 12 Volt Bible, by Miner Brotherton and Edwin Sherman

Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual, by Nigel Calder

Marine Diesel Engines, by Nigel Calder

Books on Cruising and Voyaging

These books will help a sailor plan for their dream passages and where they want to take their boat, once they have gained the skills and experience to set off beyond the sight of shore.

Sensible Cruising, by Don Casey, Lew Hackler

The Voyager’s Handbook, 2nd Ed., by Beth Leonard

World Cruising Routes, 7th Ed., by Jimmy Cornell

World Cruising Destinations, by Jimmy Cornell

Basic Sailing Reference Books

These books will help keep the sailor’s skills grounded and sharp and help answer any questions they might have about basic sailing and seamanship.

The Complete Sailor, 2nd Ed, by David Seidman

Chapman Piloting & Seamanship, 67th Ed., by Jonathon Eaton

Sailing Stories

These books are to inspire sailors of all skill levels, ages and with all types of boats into what they might be able to do.

Flirting with Mermaids, by John Kretschmer

Maiden Voyage, by Tania Aebi

Return to the Sea, by Webb Chiles

North to the Night, by Alvah Simon
