New England Sports Fans

Posted on Monday 29 October 2007

This season seems to be an unusually good one for New England sports fans. Last night, the Boston Red Sox just swept the Colorado Rockies to take the 2007 World Series. It does appear that the curse of the Bambino has finally been broken, as this is their second World Series victory in just four years.

Yesterday afternoon, the New England Patriots drubbed the Washington Redskins. The Boston College Eagles are doing quite well, as are the Boston Bruins. The only team that may be in question are the Boston Celtics, but they have a new front line that most think will do quite well, and possibly put them in contention.

Beating the Rockies was particularly satisfying for me, as my sister-in-law’s husband is a Rockies fan. My sister-in-law, somehow ended up a New York Yankees fan. I can’t figure that one out at all. My brother-in-law is just as bad… while he loves the Red Sox, somehow his favorite football team is the Washington Redskins—which made yesterday’s drubbing all that more important. Fortunately, his bizarre affection for the Redskins hasn’t affected my two nephews.

The Patriots look unstoppable. Yesterday was the first time they’ve defeated the Washington Redskins since Bill Belichek took over as head coach for the Patriots. It was supposed to be a difficult matchup. It was really hard to tell that, given the score of 52 to 7. I am hoping that Tom Brady and Randy Moss will be able to bring their team another Superbowl, but a lot of that will depend on random chance and the injuries that occur during the season.

I don’t follow college sports much… and Boston College Eagles not at all, since I didn’t go there… but with Boston College located so nearby, hearing about their current success is unavoidable. I wish them luck. I don’t follow hockey at all…so it’s basically the same thing with the Boston Bruins.

As for the Celtics, it really remains to be seen whether their new lineup can bring back the glory days of Bird, Parrish and McHale that I recall from the 1980s. I hope so… especially because it is really sad to see such a great basketball franchise sitting at the bottom of the heap for so many years.

This may all change tomorrow…but for now… it seems to be a good time for us, the New England Sports Fans.
