New MacBook Pros Announced

Posted on Wednesday 25 October 2006

I had a conversation with a friend of mine about a month ago. She was asking about what laptop to buy. I told her to get a new MacBook Pro, but to hold off, as I felt that Apple would be announcing upgraded machines around the end of October, which would have the Core 2 Duo processors instead of the older Core Duos in the then current lineup of machines.

Well, yesterday, Apple did just that. The new 15“ MacBook Pro with the Core 2 Duo processor is a huge upgrade over the older MacBook Pro, like the one I have, as it has both a dual-layer DVD-R drive and FireWire 800, which were missing from the original 15” machines that came out earlier this year. I really hate when I’m right sometimes…

Some have asked when Apple will be upgrading the MacBooks, but my feeling on this is that they won’t be upgrading the processor in the MacBook for a while.  They probably want to keep the processor in the MacBook Pro a bit more advanced, in order to help justify the “Pro” level appellation and the fairly significant price difference.
