Last Sail of the Season

Posted on Monday 31 October 2005

Saturday, I went over to the Boston Sailing Center for their Halloween member brunch. Nannette and I took a Soling out for a sail before the brunch, while the others were out racing. Nannette was the other person in my sailing course at the Boston Sailing Center. Unlike myself, she hadn’t sailed before the class started. I have to give her a lot of credit, learning to sail, especially if you don’t swim well, can be challenging. She’s improved quite a bit since our first day out, back in September.

The weather was a bit cloudy and cold, even for a New England autumn. Getting the sails up and untying the boat from the mooring took a bit longer than usual because of the cold. In fact, by the time we were tied up to the mooring at the end of our sail, it was snowing and the boat was dusted with it. We decided not to go out for the afternoon.

The brunch was buffet style. I had the lasagna and stuffed mushrooms. We spent about an hour talking to some of the other BSC members. Nannette and I decided to get one more sail in before the season ended—Halloween Day.

Today, Halloween, was the last day of the season at the Boston Sailing Center, and Nannette and I went out for the day. We both wanted to get another sail in before the season ended. Unlike Saturday’s sailing, the weather today was perfect. Mid-60’s and sunny with a decent breeze. A huge change from two days earlier. But that’s weather in New England—if you don’t like it, wait a minute, it’ll change soon enough. Today was the perfect end to the season.

Too bad it will be so long until the season starts again in May.
